Description
Lead Data Engineer - £110,000 - Remote First (Must be based within the UK)
What if you could shape the data architecture behind the next generation of AI-powered business intelligence?
We're looking for an experienced Lead Data Engineer to help advance the data, analytics and intelligence capabilities at the heart of our growing technology platform.
We're a UK-based, venture-backed AI scale-up working with some of the world's largest organisations. Our patented technologies combine advanced analytics, AI and high-quality data to help businesses understand capability, improve performance and make better-informed decisions.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex technical challenges, work with high-quality datasets and build solutions that deliver meaningful value for enterprise clients.
Initially, this is a senior, hands-on technical role with significant influence over architecture, engineering standards and technical direction. As the business grows, there will also be opportunities to develop and lead a wider data engineering function.
What you'll be doing
You'll play a central role in shaping how we build, manage and deliver data-driven intelligence.
Your responsibilities will include:
Designing, building and operating scalable data platforms and pipelines for large, complex datasets.
Developing our Data-as-a-Service capabilities across products, analytics and customer solutions.
Transforming high-quality data into trusted, decision-ready intelligence for enterprise clients.
Building robust data models, analytical datasets, dashboards and business intelligence solutions.
Designing secure, reliable and well-documented data services and APIs.
Developing data infrastructure to support machine learning, Bayesian and probabilistic modelling, deterministic decision systems and agentic AI.
Building data-access and evaluation capabilities for production AI agents, including governed retrieval, secure tool interfaces, test datasets, lineage and measurable quality standards.
Establishing best practices around data quality, observability, metadata, governance and lifecycle management.
Embedding security, privacy, access controls, tenant isolation and auditability into data architecture.
Championing engineering excellence through automated testing, validation, reproducibility and continuous improvement.
Exploring how AI-assisted engineering tools can improve productivity while maintaining security, quality and accountability.
Working closely with software engineering, product, data science, security, commercial and leadership teams.
You'll have the freedom to challenge existing approaches, introduce new ideas and influence the long-term technical direction of our data capabilities.
What we're looking for
We're interested in an experienced data engineer who combines strong technical foundations with curiosity, sound judgement and a practical approach to solving complex problems.
You'll ideally bring:
Significant experience designing, building and operating production-grade data platforms.
Experience working with large, complex or high-volume datasets.
Strong knowledge of data architecture, pipelines, transformation, storage, modelling and orchestration.
Experience delivering analytics and business intelligence capabilities that support reliable decision-making.
Experience designing and operating secure data services and APIs.
Practical experience enabling AI and machine learning systems through dependable, well-governed data.
A strong understanding of statistics, data science, experimental methods and probabilistic reasoning.
Experience with Bayesian or probabilistic modelling and deterministic or rules-based decision systems.
An understanding of agentic AI architectures, including data access, tool integration, orchestration, evaluation and observability.
Experience working in enterprise or other high-trust environments.
A strong understanding of data security, privacy, regulatory compliance and responsible data use.
You'll also care about engineering quality, maintainability, automated testing, peer review, documentation and building systems that can be trusted.
What we'd like to see
The following experience would be a real advantage, although you don't need to have worked with everything listed:
AWS cloud-native data architecture and engineering.
Amazon Quick, QuickSight and the wider AWS analytics ecosystem.
Embedded analytics, enterprise reporting and secure data integration.
Building platforms for regulated, security-conscious or high-trust customers.
Taking statistical, machine learning or AI systems into production.
Developing governed data-access, testing and evaluation frameworks for AI agents.
Introducing secure and productive AI-assisted development practices, including tools such as Claude Code.
We value strong engineering foundations, good judgement and the ability to learn just as much as experience with specific technologies.
What you'll get
Private medical insurance.
A remote-first working environment, with the flexibility to work from anywhere in the UK.
Access to our central Cambridge and London offices for collaboration and team activities.
Significant technical autonomy and influence over architecture and engineering direction.
The opportunity to work on innovative AI, data and analytics technologies.
The chance to work with some of the world's largest and most exciting organisations.
The opportunity to help shape and potentially lead a growing data engineering function.
Location and eligibility
This is a remote-first position, open to candidates based anywhere in the UK. We have offices in central Cambridge and central London for those occasions when face-to-face collaboration is beneficial.
Applicants must:
Be resident in the UK.
Have the right to work in the UK.
Have lived continuously in the UK for the previous five years.
Be able to complete role-appropriate pre-employment screening.
