Description
To drive cohesive alignment between engineering initiatives and strategic business goals, the Business Manager will oversee the operational framework that governs engineering portfolio management and program execution. This role demands a balance of strategic foresight and hands-on delivery focus, ensuring that engineering efforts translate into measurable business impact while maintaining transparency across priorities, capacity, and risks within a complex technical environment.
The Business Manager acts as a pivotal link between the Engineering COO, leadership teams, and cross-functional stakeholders, responsible for managing the full engineering portfolio lifecycle—from annual and quarterly planning through to execution oversight. By maintaining clarity on resource allocation, budget, and delivery commitments, this role supports informed decision-making that aligns engineering investments with broader corporate objectives.
Key responsibilities include owning the engineering book of work and leading the portfolio management process to monitor dependencies, risks, and capacity. The Business Manager will also be instrumental in coordinating high-impact cross-functional programmes, such as AI transformation, platform modernization, and operational effectiveness initiatives. Establishing governance frameworks and success metrics, they will remove obstacles and escalate critical issues to ensure smooth delivery of strategic initiatives.
Supporting the organisation’s operational cadence is integral to this role. The Business Manager will orchestrate leadership forums, planning sessions, and executive reporting—developing dashboards and analytics that deliver actionable insights into performance and business value realisation. Partnership with Finance is equally important, encompassing budget planning, forecasting, and management of technology investments to uphold financial discipline and support business cases.
Workforce planning and organisational design fall within the remit of the Business Manager, including visibility over skill gaps, headcount planning, and succession strategies. This ensures the right capabilities are in place to meet evolving demands, particularly across a hybrid working model that requires three days onsite presence.
Candidates for this Business Manager role will thrive in a high-visibility position demanding strong influence and communication skills. They will be comfortable navigating complex data, distilling it into strategic recommendations, and engaging multiple leadership layers. Experience in managing technical portfolios, driving operational improvements, and supporting transformation initiatives will be essential.
This is a permanent role situated within the corporate banking sector, specifically focusing on investment and corporate banking environments. The role offers a hybrid working arrangement alongside a pension scheme with contributions. Candidates should be prepared to operate in a high-stakes, technology-enabled context where engineering efforts underpin key business performance objectives.
